Few stories mix reality with fiction as much as that of the Afghan hound,\u00a0a gallant exotic breed of great beauty.<\/strong>\u00a0Safeguarded by the Afghans as a great treasure, this greyhound\u00a0it was not discovered by Europeans until the late 19th century<\/strong>. Despite the appearance of the World Wars and the extinction of the European line, the passion that had awakened achieved its reappearance and survival in the West.<\/p>\n

If there is a king of dogs, that is the Afghan hound<\/strong>, a mysterious dog that captivates you at the first glance. ORIGIN AND HISTORY OF THE AFGHAN LEBREL<\/h1>\n

Unlike other races,\u00a0the origin of the Afghan hound is full of\u00a0mysteries and legends<\/a><\/strong>. From considering it as one of the oldest races in our world to pointing out that they were\u00a0chosen by Noe<\/strong>\u00a0to be saved from the Universal Flood. And it is that tracing its history is a difficult path full of myths and few reliable data.<\/p>\n

This lack of data has its explanation\u00a0nomadic spirit<\/strong>\u00a0of the peoples who inhabited these territories, as well as by the\u00a0arrival and expansion of Islam<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0that prohibited the representation of living beings.<\/p>\n

Nonetheless,\u00a0the most accepted theory<\/a>\u00a0points out\u00a0its origin in Persia, from where it would reach the territory of present-day Afghanistan through trade routes<\/strong>. The exact date on which the arrival would have occurred is unknown, but the\u00a0saluki as the race of origin<\/strong>\u00a0of the current Afghan hound. The saluki had to adapt to the climatic and geographic diversity of Afghanistan, giving rise to different types of greyhound depending on the region in which they lived and their work, either as a hunting, defense or herding dog.<\/p>\n

In Afghanistan there was a great protection of the breed, preventing its export abroad due to its consideration of\u00a0National Treasure<\/strong>. It was not until\u00a0late 19th and early 20th centuries when some specimens were exported to Great Britain from India.<\/strong>\u00a0The popularity of the breed was achieved with\u00a0the victory of \u00abZardino\u00bb<\/a>\u00a0on the\u00a0England Dog Show in 1907<\/strong>\u00a0in the category of foreign dogs, establishing the first breed standard in the West. Although it would not last long, due to the outbreak of the\u00a0First World War<\/strong>\u00a0it paralyzed dog activity and its export,\u00a0getting to lose the race in Europe<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

After the end of the war, exports were resumed<\/strong>\u00a0Sighthound specimens from Afghanistan<\/strong>, but none of them met the standard set by Zardino. At the time\u00a0existed\u00a0two different types according to their origin<\/a><\/strong>:\u00a0the sighthounds of the desert regions<\/strong>\u00a0from the south-west, with a slim and stylized complexion, with little light-colored fur;\u00a0and the sighthounds of the mountainous regions of the north<\/strong>, with a more compact structure and a denser coat of darker tones.\u00a0Both types were mixing<\/a>\u00a0until reaching the current breed standard.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Currently, Afghan Hounds<\/strong>\u00a0have relegated to the background their facet of hunting, shepherd or defense dogs and\u00a0are admired for their great exotic beauty<\/strong>. Beauty that makes them habitual of\u00a0dog beauty shows<\/strong>, as well as cinema and advertising.<\/p>\n

PHYSICAL CHARACTERISTICS OF THE AFGHAN LEBREL<\/h1>\n

The official standard for the Afghan hound was established by the\u00a0International Cynological Federation<\/a>\u00a0in 2010<\/strong>. Classified in group 10 section 1 as\u00a0sighthounds with long or wavy hair<\/strong>, their\u00a0physical characteristics<\/a>\u00a0are:<\/p>\n

  1. Hope of<\/strong>\u00a0lifetime<\/strong>: between 12 and 14 years old.<\/li>\n
  2. Size<\/strong>: big.<\/li>\n

  5. Complexion<\/strong>: slim.<\/li>\n
  6. Extremities<\/strong>: long and strong.<\/li>\n
  7. Eyes<\/strong>: almond shaped and slightly oblique towards the outside, which gives them an almost triangular appearance. Preferably dark, but golden tones are not excluded.<\/li>\n
  8. Ears<\/strong>: long, set low, well behind the head and covered with long hair.<\/li>\n
  9. Snout:<\/strong>\u00a0long with black nose, although liver color is allowed in specimens with light fur.<\/li>\n
  10. Jaws<\/strong>: long and powerful with scissor bite, although pincer bite is also accepted.<\/li>\n
  11. Neck<\/strong>: long and strong to support a proud bearing of the head.<\/li>\n
  12. Line<\/strong>: long, low and forming a ring at the tip. It is covered with a very fine hair in the shape of a feather.<\/li>\n
  13. Hair<\/strong>: long and silky that covers your entire body. The hair in the facial region is short and lengthens from the forehead, growing a well-defined lock at the beginning.<\/li>\n

It is considered\u00a0the most elegant<\/strong>\u00a0of dogs, not only because of their hair, but also because of their\u00a0aristocratic bearing<\/strong>. Despite its singularities, the Afghan hound maintains\u00a0many character similarities to their sister races<\/strong>, like his fear of strangers.<\/p>\n

      It is a breed of contradictions. It is\u00a0a free spirit<\/strong>, a dog with personality, brave, independent and very\u00a0sensitive to its surroundings<\/strong>. But at the same time they are very\u00a0sweet and tremendously loyal to their owner<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

      Although in certain circles it is considered a disobedient dog and difficult to educate, it is not so much because of its lack of intelligence, but because of the inadequate teaching methods that are used. To have a good bond, you must opt for a\u00a0polite or positive education<\/strong>, in which active punishments are dispensed with, avoiding serious problems such as learned helplessness in the future.<\/p>\n

      The Afghan Hound\u00a0it is a breed of dog bred for hunting, herding and guarding<\/strong>. Has a natural predisposition towards\u00a0hunting prey on the move\u00a0<\/strong>and although it does not become as fast in the race as the greyhound, it is very robust and resistant, being able to\u00a0run smoothly on all types of terrain<\/strong>. For this reason, special attention must be paid before releasing it in unbounded spaces.<\/p>\n

        AFGHAN LEBREL CARE<\/h1>\n

        The Afghan hound is a dog that requires a lot of care<\/strong>. To keep your famous hair healthy and clean,\u00a0needs daily brushing<\/strong>\u00a0to avoid knots, as well as\u00a0monthly baths and visits to the hairdresser\u00a0<\/strong>to preserve its characteristic cut. Having such long and abundant hair, it is recommended\u00a0check it well during brushing for possible parasites<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

        Thanks to the protection of his mantle,\u00a0it is a breed that is friendly to cold climates<\/strong>. This does not mean that you should cut or shave your hair during the summer because it serves as a thermal insulator and protects you from the sun.<\/p>\n
